When Miren first contacted me to book a family photoshoot in Venice, I immediately loved her energy. She described their family as fun and informal, and hoped for some photos with a gondola – even just in the background. What she didn’t expect, I think, was just how magical an early summer morning in Venice could be.
Miren and her family were staying near San Marco, and wanted to focus their photoshoot in that area. With young children in the group, their ideal start time was around 9–10 AM – but I gently suggested an earlier start to beat the crowds and catch the best light. Thankfully, they trusted me. And I’m so glad they did.
Early mornings in Venice are truly special, offering an unparalleled quietude perfect for families. The soft light, cooler temperatures, and empty streets mean more freedom for little ones to explore and genuine moments to unfold.
A Quiet Morning in San Marco Square
We met just after sunrise in August. The light was soft and golden, and the famous square was still empty – a rare moment of calm in Venice. It was the kind of setting photographers dream about.
But let’s be honest – the kids were not morning people. Little Sirena, 5, just wanted to be held by her dad. Leo, 3, was sleepily watching everything unfold with quiet suspicion. It was clear: posed group shots weren’t going to happen right away.
So we let go of the plan – and decided to just have fun. This is always my approach with families: adapting to their natural rhythm and focusing on what makes them shine. And after all we are here to enjoy!
Candid Moments, Real Smiles
Instead of asking everyone to smile for the camera, we danced, played, and let the family enjoy the moment. I focused on capturing laughter, hugs, the way Sirena leaned into her daddy’s shoulder, and how the siblings giggled between takes. These are the real memories – and they’re often the most beautiful.
Eventually, the kids warmed up. They posed with their aunty Beatriz, gave us a few classic “Christmas card” shots, and even smiled for the camera on their own terms.
A Sweet Ending (with Gelato!)
We wrapped the shoot the best way possible: with a stop for Italian gelato. The kids were happy, the light was still golden, and the whole family was glowing with joy.
Later, Miren sent me a message that made my heart melt:
“We loved our photos! Olga magically captured such a special moment for our family! And Olga was so patient with the kids! We are also so incredibly happy that Olga was able to send them over so fast too. I almost cried, they look so good. Best decision ever! We LOVE the photos 💞”
Moments like these are why I love being a family photographer in Venice. It’s not about perfection – it’s about connection, trust, and creating space for joy, even on sleepy little faces.
