Some trips are too special not to be photographed – and Alena knew this was one of them. She gifted herself a solo portrait session while visiting Venice, not to mark an occasion, but simply to celebrate her time in a city she was falling in love with.
She didn’t want stiff posing or touristy landmarks – just real, beautiful photos that felt like her: stylish, confident, and a little mysterious.
Natural Portraits in Castello, Venice’s Quiet District
Since Alena was staying in Castello, we used that as our playground. This district is often overlooked, but it’s full of quiet charm, authentic Venetian architecture, and one of my favourite spots for creative portraits: Campo dell’Arsenale, where the famous Piraeus Lion stands guard.
Venice is full of lion statues, bas-reliefs, and carvings – they’re a symbol of the city itself. The lions in this square are especially striking, and made the perfect backdrop for our start.
It was a crisp October morning – the sun was already high but the chill lingered. Alena arrived layered in style: a full black pantsuit and long coat to start, which she later swapped for an open blazer and finally a soft cream dress that matched the light. We leaned into her look – elegant, modern, and bold.
More Mood, Less Posing
Alena wasn’t looking for classic poses or Pinterest moments. Instead, we focused on creating a mood – quiet confidence, a little edge, and a hint of mystery. We wandered through stone alleys, paused in doorways and corners where light danced just right, and let the city be part of the story without stealing the spotlight.
By the end of the session, we had a full gallery of expressive portraits – polished, powerful, and completely her.
She later told me the photos were “exactly what I hoped for – natural and beautiful.” I couldn’t agree more.
Planning Your Own Portrait Photoshoot in Venice
If you’re traveling solo, a portrait session is one of the most meaningful souvenirs you can bring home. Here are a few of my tips to make the most of it:
• Choose a photographer whose style fits you – look through full galleries, not just Instagram grids.
• Talk about your goals beforehand – do you want soft and romantic? Bold and editorial? Just-for-fun?
• Bring a second outfit (or two!) – it adds variety and helps you feel your best.
• Pack comfy shoes – especially if you’ll be changing outfits or shooting longer than 45 minutes.
• Don’t worry about “posing” – your energy will lead the session. The best portraits happen when you feel like yourself.
